Can we sustain our energy model?

NO. Do not let more laps, our current energy model is unsustainable. And so is our lifestyle linked to it. This will leave here for ecointeligentes reflection of our friends.

But what would a sustainable energy model? Can we say that would be one characterized by a pattern of production and consumption that made compatible economic, social and environmental development, meeting the energy needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Three elements must be satisfied that the model is sustainable. Read:

Energy security: must ensure continuity of supply to consumers at reasonable prices.

Competitiveness: should not endanger the competitiveness of the economy and its growth.

Environmental sustainability: production and consumption of energy should be a manageable impact on our environment.

The energy sector is responsible for 80% of emissions of greenhouse gases.

Our current energy model is characterized by a constant growth in energy consumption, based on finite fossil resources. According to forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA), world primary energy demand will grow at an annual rate of 1.5% until 2030, predominantly from fossil fuels, which represent 80% of the energy consumed on that date.

Now we will study the unsustainability from its three aspects :

Regarding the economic sustainability, it is a remarkable economy based on consumption of finite fossil fuels compromised their competitiveness before the expected growth will experience rising prices of energy raw materials.

We must also consider the risks of supply disruption faced with situations of various kinds, such as those affecting several countries in the European Union, caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

On the side of the environmental criteria, the development of energy consumption baseline scenario implies an increase in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) much higher than necessary to achieve the stage 450 ppm, which aims to limit the increase in the temperature to 2 ° C .

We know there is international consensus on the need to reduce global emissions by at least 50% by 2050 against 1990 levels to avoid an increase higher than the above temperature.

From the social point of view, the current energy model prevents access to advanced forms of energy , such as the electricity mainly to 2,000 million people, hindering human development and the potential for future economic growth in this part of the Site.

Focusing on solutions, they pass by reducing dependence on fossil fuel economy and GHG emissions. For this there are basically 2 large blocks of measures:

On demand: consist of actions aimed at improving energy efficiency in end uses, reducing energy consumption in lighting, heating and cooling, displacement…

Concerning the offer: it consists of the implementation of technologies that enable the decarbonisation of the energy mix, the still essential promotion of renewable energies and CO2 capture and storage (CCS).

In all analyzes, the energy efficiency is considered the primary measure to meet the challenges of the energy model from the point of view of demand, estimating the IEA that about 60% reduction of GHG emissions needed by 2020 to reach the 450 ppm scenario comes from the efficiency measures in end uses.

Along with the energy efficiency, the second largest block measures and noted in offering solutions, is promoting renewable energy, which would be about a 20% decrease emissions by 2020, largely in line with the EU 20/20/20 targets.
